Upon the Eyelid

Written by the poet: Mustafa Youssef Al-Qashlan

Ah, you who were written upon the eyelid of the eye,

as longing, tenderness, and a love kept deep within,

while youth was still a child among the trees,

a beloved companion, while the spring of life

turned into autumn, again and again.

And the roses hear the whispering of the lanterns;

woe to love, and woe to the memory

that time once lived as an old film.

The days pass, then return with severity,

and the anguish of love rises like a volcano.

Time grows proud, reminding us

of Cain and Abel and the age of humankind.

Let love blame no one

for the foolishness of humanity.

Pass on, for those who take heed;

words are merely words,

and the foolish have no reckoning with them.

He thought that words were a closed book,

and that death was the end of speech,

and that all the films of time

were written with sorrow and pain.

So we opened the words, and raised with the pen

the banner of the end of time.

We shall not walk beneath an age

driven by the false Messiah,

by wars upon wars.

For we were nothing but those who raised

the banner of Islam,

speaking words from its message.

We carried them to their rightful place,

and all the lines and words

became a continuing struggle.

And today, among the people of eloquence,

there are those who laugh and mock.

So let there be a curse upon you,

for this is the end of time.

A beggar among kings,

while the eagle stretches across the brow;

there shall never be upon this earth

a human being like another.
