My painting spoke
Dr. Muhammad Tawfiq Mamdouh Al-Rifai
From the pages of One Thousand and One Nights, she slipped in
You shared with me a night whose moon was absent
And from the inspiration of my dreams, an image I drew? In my imagination I envisioned her and drew her
I journeyed with her through a world of colors
And in my studio, with my brush, I created her portrait
From the colors of the rainbow, I blended her hues
I made her fair-skinned, translucent, and dark
I made her a gypsy, black-eyed and kohl-rimmed
And from the blue of the sky, I blended the white of her eyes
And with the green meadows, she mingled Her color
From the legends of ages past, she had a share
And from the goddesses of love and beauty, I drew her beauty
I selected the most beautiful charms of women, the magic of her allure
I bestowed upon her the purity and clarity of the maidens
I named her with the most beautiful names
From the inspiration of my poems, her status rose
I depicted her as rose gardens
And in the corners and recesses of my chamber, I scattered them
She smiled at me With joy and delight
And she spoke her most beautiful words
My feelings and emotions bestowed them upon her
The enchantress of beauty
She is the pinnacle of my hopes
The girl of my dreams I made her
Until I became a prisoner of her love
In my heart she is with me, I carry her
I traveled with her to all lands
Of Arabs and non-Arabs
And I roamed with her through worlds of magic
And in every language I courted her
On her lips, a note of melodies played
And on My poems danced,
Swaying until their branches soared,
I imagined myself, from the inspiration of her imagination,
Moved, whispered, spoke,
I saw her with my own eyes,
A nymph, a fragrant flower, slender,
Showcasing elegance,
And with all the splendor of beauty, her loveliness shone upon the universe,
Glimping like the waves of the sea, flowing,
Sparkling, moonlit, her light like the full moon,
She captivated me thus Paradise
And the paths took me as they came
I followed her like her shadow, hidden behind her
Like the wind, the ships follow her
Until she passed a bend
She seized me by the hem of her garment
I called to her, I adjured her by God, "Wait!"
She said, "Woe to you, O man! Are you a fool?
Or are you a jinn, a wandering musk?"
Then she began to revolve in her orbit
I said, "By God, no!" Nor that
In my room, I left you to adorn its walls
And from your smile, I hear my poems
You play their most beautiful melodies
She said, "Woe to you! Did you know me?
Or did you not know shame?"
After her senses had flown away
I looked at her, hoping for her composure
And my heart raced from her charm
I asked her for mercy and compassion
And for kindness towards my situation
Pleading for generosity Her character
She smiled until her whiteness shone like pearls and hail
She said, "O you who are possessed by a spirit of jinn
I am not a figment of your imagination
Nor a painting you created in your studio
I am a nymph, few women have her equal
From your obsession with you
You imagined you saw her
Where are you in relation to me, when I am the sun
When its light shines upon the world
And I am the moon of the nights that illuminates Her darkness
And she smiled, illuminating the place with the radiance of her face
And from the pearls she said
My story, O you, I will reveal its secret to you
My image is a painting in your studio, adorned
From the creativity of your inspiration, I created it
And your poems in my ear, the echo of their melody
Every night you would visit me when its darkness fell
And the poems in my heart I hid them
Take me to your studio and do not worry
There I see myself fulfilling her dreams
Don't withhold from me a song whose melody delights me
In the morning we sing it together
And at night we dance to its tunes
Come, for love unites us
No separation will scatter us after today
We live life's most beautiful days
There in my studio she revealed her secret
And sang the most beautiful melodies Her melodies
A paradise I lived in, in its heavenly abode
And beneath the groves we sipped the cup of its wine
My wish was fulfilled between wakefulness and dream
It attained its goal
Did my tablet truly speak?
Or did my age betray me?
So I became a prisoner of the fantasies I imagined
